Lyon’s Viscount

I’m back! After a way longer than intended hiatus away from SQ, it’s time to cleanse the taste buds, get my “useless facts” hat on and dig out the book of sarcastic comments.
For “series 2” of SQ reviews, the format hasn’t changed at all, but the consistency of when I release articles needs to be addressed, so I’m aiming for at the least 1 a week, there may well be more than that, but that’s my minimum target.
To celebrate the return that nobody asked for, we’re going to look at a biscuit, which is a first for this page, believe it or not!

13933032_10153787573411463_3952629_n (2)From the off, the Viscount oozes the image of a regal Sunday afternoon tea at the manor house of a wealthy socialite, a grand green foil coat protects the precious chocolate covered mint creme roof, and the delicate, crumbly biscuit beneath it…

That would be all be very true if this was being written in 1992, in 2016 the Viscount has plunged down the biscuit social ladder.
In 2005 an attempted redesign in the name of focusing on the “adult luxury market” evidently didn’t work as now it can it can be found sitting on discount store shelves and mingling alongside common muck such as the KitKat or freaks like Garibaldi and Thin Arrowroot, at least the Blue Riband can sympathise.
Now manufactured by Burton’s Biscuits, still under the historic Lyon’s brand, which also includes other “delights” such as Fig Rolls and Toffypops.

The orange Viscount was officially declared deceased by Burton’s in 2014. A double chocolate version in purple foil was also available for a short while in the mid 1990s.

Enough slagging it off, how does the old Viscount taste today? Cheaper than it looks of course, the mint creme isn’t very potent and the biscuit base is quite brittle and I forget it’s even covered in chocolate because it’s so underwhelming.
For the price, however it’s a nice little peak into to what we thought was posh back in the day, now it’s all about being artisan and handmade by two hippy types in a dairy free, vegan shed in Berkshire.

Do you still  bow for the Viscount? Do you remember them being a lot better than they are today? Please comment and let this young gun know!
